Hamelin prison, was a very well known prison during WW2 and in the immediate aftermath. During the Third Reich the Gestapo used the prison to imprison ,interrogate and torture many of its victims. Following wars end it was again used as a prison and place of execution. War criminals the infamous Josef Kramer and Irma Grese were just two executions carried out by Pierrepoint during his work at Hamelin.
The most famous British Hangman in history, Albert Pierrepoint , was the head executioner for the British Government and it was he that was responsible for most all executions at Hamelin. Pierrepoint was born March 30th 1905 in Clayton Yorks. His father and his uncle were both executioners. In September 1932 he became an assistant executioner and conducted his first execution in December the same year. In 1941 he became lead executioner for H.M Prisons. In a 25 year career as hangman, it is believed that he executed circa 600 individuals, a large proportion convicted war criminals. He retired in the 1950's and became a pub landlord, in 1974 he wrote his memoirs.
A unique opportunity to own an execution hood of a Nazi war criminal possibly even the very hood that was used to dispatch Irma Grese or Josef Kramer!
